[ARCHIVED] CITY TESTING FREE WIFI AT MCGREGOR PARK

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – In addition to the stunning display of lights at Christmas on the Cumberland, visitors to McGregor Park this holiday season will be able to enjoy free WiFi access.

The installation of eight WiFi access points in the riverfront park has been a joint effort by the City’s Information Technology Department, CDE Lightband and vendors Layer 3 Communications and CommScope.

“We’re excited to provide WiFi connectivity as a test during Christmas on the Cumberland,” Mayor Joe Pitts said. “I commend our IT Department and CDE Lightband for jumping on the idea and giving this a try.”

The McGregor Park WiFi access test will start Nov. 27 and run through Jan. 1, coinciding with the popular annual Christmas on the Cumberland light display.

“Mayor Pitts asked us to look at providing citywide Wifi, and this is a proof-of-concept project,” said Amie Wilson, City IT Director. “If the test is a success, we will look at expanding the WiFi to other parts of the City as part of the 2021 budget process.”

When citizens connect their devices to the WiFi, they will be redirected to the City's website as a landing page. However,  providers are working to send WiFi users to a survey page, where they can vote for their favorite Christmas on the Cumberland light display.

Christmas on the Cumberland, Clarksville’s popular lighted walk-through event, is open nightly from 5-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 5-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Jan. 1, 2020. Admission is free.

Family-friendly free activity nights will take place in McGregor Park from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21.  This year’s activities include hot chocolate, holiday crafts and performances by local dance groups.
